This is actually the name of the town, but can also double as a summation of our extended weekend trip. Sugar City, ID will always be at the top of Jonathan's favorite places to visit list. Why? Grandma McKenna, of course! What more could you want to escape the demands of a stressful life than homemade bread, piano playing, 50 items on the table at every meal, waking up to farm animals, gorgeous sunsets over the potato and wheat fields, family history, and grandma of course. Since it was harvest time there seemed to be a haze of dust throughout the area, but of course cleared up on Sundays. :) Gotta love Idaho! Jonathan was kind enough to watch the kids while I escaped to the Rexburg temple for a few hours on Saturday. When I came back he and his grandma had made 6 loaves of whole wheat bread. Yummmm. Thanks, grandma, for everything!!!!
This is family history for Jonathan, for had it not been for the infamous Teton Flood in 1976 his parents would never have met. The upper left picture shows a broken earthen dam and the bottom picture shows the destructive path the flood took. Sugar City was hit by a 10 ft wall of mud, water and debris. Total destruction was an understatement. The city was buried in at least 8 ft of water and everyone escaped to Ricks College on the hill. Some people floated with their homes and seemed to crawl out alive. Unfortunately, 14 were not so lucky. The other picture is the story behind where the name Sugar City came from. Fun stuff.
