Ophir Pass was a beautiful drive, as are most 4x4 mountain passes in Colorado. The elevation was only 11,789 but felt higher as we approached the summit. We LOVE our Jeep - it has taken up places most will rarely see in their lifetimes. Que viva el lindo colorado!
After we came back down to Red Mountain Pass we drove another 5 miles to one of our favorite little western mining towns - Silverton. Set in the midst of the San Juan mountains, this little community dates back to 1874 and was well known for it's bustling red light district. Gold and Silver was mined from the surrounding mountains and the narrow gauge stream engine railroad connecting it to Durango still runs today (popular with tourists). It sits at 9305 ft. in elevation and has a population of around 600. It has been wonderfully restored and you really get a sense of what it was like living in the 1800s during the gold rush.
