Planting, Harvesting, and Preserving

Our garden in New Zealand was wonderful and huge, but we had to leave at the height of harvest season.  We came back to the states in time to plant again and we crammed in as much as we could.  It wasn't quite as big as in New Zealand since we didn't grow potatoes this year, but it yielded gobs of veggies, herbs, and fruits.  We planted sweet potatoes, butternut/spaghetti/acorn/crookneck squashes, zucchinis, pumpkins, watermelons, honeydew melons, broccoli, yellow/red onions, spring onions, cucumbers, bell peppers, strawberries, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, beets, carrots, lavender, dill, basil, sage, chives, oregano, thyme, rosemary, and parsley (I think that was it).  The boys love helping in the garden and love seeing the fruits of their labors even more.  What a great life learning tool, not to mention all of the free delicious produce that results from good old fashion hard work.
Just after planting.  We built the two boxes near the house and brought in a whole pick-up full of organic compost to till in.

This was a typical picking on a hot summer day

Now, what will we plant next year? Hmmm.....

You should give us a tutorial on starting a garden. After moving into our new place, we'd love to start planting, but it's figuring out those first few steps that seems a bit daunting. What do you need to know/do to begin?
