Here is Ethan's halloween costume. You're probably wondering what he's supposed to be. In honor of one of nature's fuzziest creepy crawlies, Ethan will be knocking on doors as a Woolly Worm (technically called a Woolly Bear Caterpillar). You see, there is a festival in western North Carolina every fall that is held in honor of this little critter. WHY?.....well, because the highlight of the festival is a day-long competition to find out which is the fastest woolly worm in the whole land. All day, there are heats featuring 10 to 15 worms racing up individual 3-foot-long strings. The winner of each heat advances until finally one woolly worm is crowned the victor. What's so special, you ask? The winning woolly worm has the honor of forecasting the severity of the upcoming winter. All worms have 13 fuzzy black or brown bands....each unique in the order of its bands. It is said, that the 13 bands represent the 13 weeks of winter. Each brown band represents a mild winter week and a black band stands for a colder and snowier week of winter. So, at the end of a long day of racing, the winning woolly worm stands high before a huge crowd and the upcoming winter is forecasted. Looking back over the past 30 years, statistics have shown these little fuzzy guys to have an 85% accuracy in their prediction.........what do you think about that?

So, here's our little Woolly Worm. We were sad to miss this year's Woolly Worm Festival...and jealous of our dear friends, the Hirschis, who got to go back this year and enter the big race! We were cheering for you guys! Instead, in honor of this fun fall festival, Jeni decided to make Ethan a homemade woolly worm costume for Halloween.

SPECIAL SHOT: Here's our own woolly worm developing on of his hidden talents.....cramming crayons between each of his little toes!

Ahhh.....here's what you should look for this fall! So, if you're ever in the Carolinas on the 3rd weekend of October, head over to Banner Elk, NC for a fun day of racing and other festivities and make sure to hang around for the winter forecast! We'll be there next year!
